What is Smile Aesthetics?
When you think of a beautiful smile, the first thing that comes to mind is beautiful teeth. However, the beauty of one’s teeth is not the only element that creates a beautiful smile. In addition to well-arranged, healthy, white teeth, healthy, uniformly shaped and colored gums and elements such as a smooth lip structure suitable for the person’s face make it possible for the person to have the most ideal smile. In order to achieve a successful smile in terms of aesthetics, it is necessary to evaluate all these parameters that make up the smile and to determine a treatment plan according to the characteristics of the person.
All these medical interventions to provide smile aesthetics can be evaluated within the scope of smile design. The main purpose here is to design a new smile in line with one’s own demands and to obtain it with various interventions.
WHAT METHODS ARE USED WITHIN THE SCOPE OF SMILE AESTHETICS?
Since the parts that people do not like in their smiles can be very different, the methods applied within the scope of smile design also differ from person to person. In this context, teeth whitening is an important stage of smile design in someone with discoloration of their teeth, while in another, orthodontic treatment methods may be required due to crowding and size differences in the teeth. In this regard, smile aesthetic applications; It is applied to patients with an interdisciplinary approach that requires the application of different disciplines of dentistry such as restorative dental treatment, periodontology, orthodontics, oral-dental-jaw surgery in cooperation. Again, within the scope of smile aesthetics, it may be possible to benefit from the treatment methods of different disciplines such as dermatology, cosmetics, ear-nose-throat.
In this direction, dental aesthetic applications take the lead among the many treatment options to provide an aesthetic smile. The most used treatment methods within the scope of dental aesthetics can be listed as follows:
  • Application of zirconium or porcelain coatings made to eliminate shape and color defects in the tooth structure, crowding or missing teeth.
  • Implant application and porcelain laminate veneer process.
  • To make teeth whitening for patients who complain about tooth color.
  • Application of composite filling and composite lamina to teeth that have been damaged due to caries, trauma, genetics and environmental factors.
  • Application of orthodontic treatments (fixed braces or clear aligners) to eliminate crowding.
Another important part of smile aesthetics is gingival aesthetics, also known as pink aesthetics. Various procedures performed to make the gums around the teeth look aesthetically pleasing are considered within the scope of gum aesthetics. What is aimed in gingival aesthetics is to reorganize the gingiva with on-site interventions in cases where the gums cover the tooth surfaces more than they should (gummy smile) due to cosmetic problems that develop due to asymmetries, discoloration, gingival recession or deformities in the gingiva.
In this sense, the most frequently applied methods can be summarized as follows:
  • Gingivectomy procedure in which the determined part of the gums is surgically removed.
  • Gingivoplasty procedure in which shape changes are made to make the gums look more aesthetic.
  • Laser applications.
  • Cauterization application.
  • Flap surgeries applied in gingival recessions.
