Peripheral Angioplasty

Peripheral Angioplasty

Peripheral arterial disease is the condition of narrowing of the veins as a result of swellings extending into the vein with a high cholesterol (a kind of fat in the body) content between the layers of the arterial wall, and as a result, the inability to get enough blood to the area fed by the vein.
Sometimes, narrowing of the veins can occur as a result of inflammatory diseases of the vascular wall, rheumatic diseases, diseases involving the immune system, coagulation in the vein, congenital diseases or other disorders.
What are the Symptoms of Peripheral Vascular Disease?
  • Pain in the legs after walking
  • Leg pain felt during rest in the following period, numbness in the legs
  • Weakness in the calf muscles, coldness in the legs and feet
  • Feeling cold
  • Color change in feet
  • Thickening of the toenails
What is Peripheral Angiography?
The procedure is done in the angio laboratory.
An angiography catheter suitable for the characteristics of the vessel to be imaged is conveyed to the vessel to be examined by using various guide wires, and the desired vessel is displayed by giving an opaque substance through the catheter, accompanied by a fluoroscopic image. The patient is taken to the follow-up area after the procedure. If the puncture site is femoral (in the groin), the patient should rest for an average of 4-6 hours in the supine position after the procedure. In patients who are applied from the femoral region, dressing or pressure bandage can be removed from the intervention areas after 4-6 hours.
How is the Preparation Before Peripheral Angiography?
  • The patient should bring the tests that he has done before. The procedure should stop eating and drinking from 24:00 the previous night.
  • The drugs he is using, on the other hand, can be taken with little water with the knowledge of the physician.
  • Blood thinners are also important for the procedure. It should not be used in consultation with a physician.
  • Other preparations to be made before angiography will be made by physicians and nurses before the procedure.
How is Peripheral Angioplasty Performed?
The vessels are widened by inserting instruments such as balloons and stents into the narrowed or occluded vessels. Peripheral angioplasty can be performed on brain vessels, arm and leg vessels, aortic vessels, vessels leading to the lungs, and renal vessels.
