Corneal Transplant

Corneal Transplant

What is Keratoplasty / Corneal transplant?
The cornea of the eye is the transparent layer that covers the anterior part of the eye, the tip of the eye, the iris and the anterior chamber.
The primary job of the cornea is to refract or bend the peeping light. In other words, if the cornea is exposed to any damage, this causes vision difficulties.
A temporary corneal transplant as a keratoplasty, or corneal graft, is a surgical operation aimed at restoring patients’ vision, reducing pain, and the appearance of a damaged or diseased cornea.
With keratoplasty (corneal transplant) extension, damaged cornea or the entire cornea with be changed with healthy corneal tissue from a donor.
Why is Cornea Transplantation Performed?
A healthy cornea is essential for good vision. Therefore, if your cornea is damaged by an eye injury or eye disease, it can become disfigured, injured, or impair your vision.
A corneal transplant is recommended for the treatment of some problems that may affect the cornea.

It occurs when the eyelashes turn inward and rub the surface of the eye, which can cause scarring or, in some cases, loss of vision.
Thinning of the Cornea (Keratoconus)
It happens when the cornea bulges outward and takes on a cone-like shape.
Eye Diseases Like Fuchs Dystrophy
It occurs when the deepest cell layer in the cornea undergoes degenerative changes. It can cause your vision to gradually worsen over time.
Corneal Scars
Improper use of contact lenses can cause deep scratches, burns and some diseases such as syphilis or shingles. These marks can affect and impair your vision.
Corneal Ulcer
Infection is a serious problem caused by overuse, inappropriate contact lenses, or other causes. A corneal ulcer can affect your vision and cause blindness.
Corneal Edema
or corneal swelling, is inflammation of the outer layer of the eye, which causes fluid to accumulate in the cornea and swelling of the cornea. This swelling can cause poor vision.
Cloudy Cornea
