LASIK

What is LASIK eye surgery?
LASIK eye surgery is the best known and most commonly performed laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can be an alternative to glasses or contact lenses.
During LASIK surgery, a special cutting laser is used to precisely change the shape of the clear dome-shaped tissue (cornea) in front of your eyes to improve vision.
In eyes with normal vision, the cornea refracts light exactly towards the retina at the back of the eye. However, in farsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision.
Glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, but surgical reshaping of the cornea will also provide the necessary refraction.
Why is LASIK Surgery Performed?
LASIK surgery may be a good option for correcting the following vision problems:
Nearsightedness (myopia)
When your eyeball is slightly longer than normal or when the cornea is too sharply curved, light rays focus in front of the retina, blurring distant vision. You can see objects that are close quite clearly, but you may not be able to see objects that are far away.
Farsightedness (hyperopia)
If you have a shorter-than-average eyeball or a very flat cornea, the light is focused behind the retina, not on it. This blurs near vision and sometimes distant vision.
Astigmatism
When the cornea is irregularly curved or flattened, the result is astigmatism that distorts the focus of near and far vision.
Pre-Operation LASIK
Long-term results from LASIK tend to be best in people who are carefully evaluated prior to surgery to ensure they are good candidates for the procedure.
If you wear contact lenses that can change the shape of your cornea, you should stop wearing them completely and only wear your glasses at least a few weeks before evaluation and surgery. Your doctor will provide specific guidelines based on the type of contacts you wear and how long you have been a contact lens wearer.
During the evaluation, your ophthalmologist will ask about your medical and surgical history and will give you a comprehensive eye exam to assess your vision and whether you can do the procedure safely.
Your doctor will look for the following signs:
  • Eye infection
  • İnflammation
  • Dry eyes
  • Large pupils
  • High eye pressure
Your eye doctor will also measure your cornea, noting the shape, contour, thickness and any irregularities. Your eye doctor will evaluate which areas of your cornea need reshaping and determine the exact amount of tissue that needs to be removed from your cornea.
Doctors often use wavefront guided technology to thoroughly evaluate your eye before LASIK surgery. In this test, a scanner creates a highly detailed chart, similar to a topographic map of your eye. The more detailed the measurements, the more accurate your eye doctor will be in removing corneal tissue.
Before surgery, your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of LASIK surgery, what to expect before and after surgery, and any questions you may have.
During LASIK operation
LASIK surgery is usually completed in 30 minutes or less. During the procedure, you will lie on your back in a reclining chair. You may be given medicine to help you relax.
After the numbing drops are placed in your eye, your doctor uses a tool to hold your eyelids open.
A suction ring placed on your eye just before the corneal flap is cut may cause a feeling of pressure and your vision may decrease slightly.
Your eye surgeon uses a small blade or cutting laser to cut a small hinged flap from the front of your eye. Folding back the flap gives your doctor access to the part of your cornea to be reshaped.
Your eye surgeon reshapes sections of your cornea using a programmed laser. With each pulse of the laser beam, a small amount of corneal tissue is removed. After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon puts the flap back in place. The flap usually heals without stitches.
During the surgery, you will be asked to focus on a point of light. Looking at this light helps keep your eye still while the laser reshapes your cornea. You can detect a distinctive odor when the laser removes your corneal tissue. Some people describe an odor similar to the smell of burning hair.
If you need LASIK surgery on both eyes, doctors will usually do both procedures on the same day.
Post-Operation LASIK
Immediately after the operation, your eye may itch, feel uncomfortable, burn and watery. You will probably see blurry. You will usually feel very little pain and your vision will usually improve quickly.
You may be given pain medication or eye drops to keep you comfortable for a few hours after the procedure. Your ophthalmologist may also ask you to wear an eye shield at night until your eye heals.
You will be able to see after surgery, but your vision will not be clear right away. It takes about two to three months for your eye to heal and your vision to stabilize after your surgery.
You will have a follow-up appointment with your eye doctor one to two days after surgery. Your doctor will examine how your eye is healing and check for any complications. Schedule other follow-up appointments as recommended by your doctor for the first six months after surgery.
It may take a few weeks before you start using cosmetics around your eyes again. You may also need to wait a few weeks before resuming strenuous contact sports, swimming or using hot tubs.
Follow your doctor’s advice on how long it will take to resume your normal activities.
Results of Lasik Surgery
LASIK offers better vision without the hassle of wearing glasses or contact lenses. In general, you will have better vision after refractive surgery.
8 out of 10 people who have LASIK refractive surgery no longer wear glasses or contact lenses for most of their activities.
The results of the surgery depend on the particular light refraction problem in your eye and other factors. People with low-grade myopia tend to benefit most from refractive surgery. People with astigmatism who are highly nearsighted or severely hyperopic have less predictable outcomes.
